Blackburn is a large market town in Lancashire with a population of around 105,000. Blackburn, situated 9 miles east of Preston and 21 miles from Manchester is part of the unity authority of Darwen and Blackburn and covers postcode areas BB0 to BB18, taking in the neighbouring towns of Accrington, Barnoldswick, Burnley, Clitheroe, Colne, Nelson and Rossendale. In 1976 St Mary’s Parish Church was granted cathedral status when Blackburn became a diocese in its own right. In the church grounds stands a marble statue of Queen Victoria by the sculptor, Sir Bertram McKennal. The town hall was built in the Italian renaissance style and dates from 1856. Blackburn boasts several parks. Corporation Park houses the war memorial. Queens Park incorporates a children’s paddling pool, bandstand and refreshment rooms. Wilton Country Park is home to Witton Park High School and Blackburn Harriers. Blackburn Rovers football club, founded in the mid-nineteenth century, still play at Elwood Park Today. The town is very fortunate to boast an Olympic size ice arena, capable of seating over 3,000 people, where local ice hockey teams, Blackburn Hawks and Lancashire Raptors hold regular fixtures.
